Decidua stromal cells (DSCs) are allogeneic, placenta-derived mesenchymal-like cells isolated from the fetal membrane of term placentas. Developed by Mats Remberger and colleagues at Uppsala University Hospital, these cells are being investigated as a cell-based therapy for steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. DSCs are characterized by potent immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory properties, which are reported to be more robust than those of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells. The therapy works by modulating the immune response, specifically by suppressing donor T-cell activation and reducing the life-threatening inflammatory response associated with severe aGVHD.
