Decoquinate

Decoquinate is a quinolone derivative primarily utilized as an anticoccidial agent in veterinary medicine. It is effective in the prevention and control of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease caused by protozoans of the genus *Eimeria* in various livestock, including poultry, cattle, sheep, and goats. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting mitochondrial oxygen consumption and electron transport within the parasites, specifically targeting sporozoites and first-generation schizonts, thereby disrupting their energy metabolism and preventing their development and reproduction. Decoquinate is typically administered orally as a medicated feed additive. While primarily a veterinary drug, it has also been investigated for potential applications in human medicine, particularly against parasitic infections like malaria, although its high lipophilicity and low aqueous solubility present challenges for human absorption.
