Dectaflur is a fluoride-containing compound used primarily in dental care for the prevention and treatment of dental caries, sensitive teeth, and the refluoridation of damaged tooth enamel. It is often formulated as a topical gel or solution and commonly used in combination with other fluoride agents such as olaflur. Chemically, dectaflur consists of oleyl amine (a long-chain amine) combined with hydrofluoric acid to form a hydrofluoride salt. The compound acts by forming a surfactant film on the surface of teeth, which facilitates the incorporation of fluoride ions into the superficial layers of enamel—thereby enhancing mineralization and resistance to decay. The precise molecular mechanism remains incompletely understood but centers on promoting remineralization through localized fluoride delivery[1][2][5][7]. Dectaflur is not known to be teratogenic at systemic toxic doses but can cause fluorosis if overdosed chronically, especially in children[1][5].
