Overview

Decyl-triphenylphosphonium (dTPP) is a lipophilic quaternary phosphonium cation that selectively accumulates within the mitochondrial matrix, driven by the mitochondrial membrane potential. It is widely utilized in biomedical research as a tool compound and an inactive control or reference for mitochondria-targeted therapeutics and antioxidants (such as MitoQ and SkQ1) to distinguish the effects of mitochondrial targeting from those of the active cargo. In preclinical oncology studies, dTPP has been investigated for its ability to induce mitochondrial membrane depolarization, elevate reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and selectively target cancer stem cells (CSCs) and chemoresistant tumor cells, particularly when combined with inhibitors of hydroperoxide metabolism or glycolysis.
