Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Defcort is an oral corticosteroid medication containing deflazacort, developed and manufactured by Macleods Pharmaceuticals. It functions as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, providing potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Deflazacort is an inactive prodrug that undergoes rapid metabolism to its active form, 21-desacetyldeflazacort. The drug is approved for a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is also notably used in the management of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to prevent organ transplant rejection by modulating the immune response and inhibiting the release of inflammatory substances.
