Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Deferasirox is an oral iron chelator used to treat chronic iron overload in patients who have received multiple blood transfusions (transfusional hemosiderosis) and in those with non–transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes. It works by selectively binding to trivalent (ferric) iron (Fe3+) with high affinity, forming a stable complex that is primarily excreted via the feces. Deferasirox has minimal affinity for other metals such as zinc and copper. The drug is indicated for adults and children at least 2 years old for transfusional iron overload, and for adults and children at least 10 years old with non–transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes who meet specific laboratory criteria. It is available as oral tablets, granules, or tablets for suspension[1][2][3][4][5][6].
