Deferitrin is a small molecule, orally active iron chelator derived from desferrithiocin. It was developed for the treatment of severe iron overload in patients requiring repeated erythrocyte transfusions, such as those with beta-thalassemia major and other chronic anemias. Deferitrin acts by binding excess iron in the body to form stable complexes that are then excreted, primarily via feces. The drug reached phase 1/2 clinical trials but its development was halted due to nephrotoxicity concerns[1][4][5]. Preclinical studies demonstrated effective iron excretion and good oral absorption[5].
