Overview

Deferoxamine is a potent iron chelator used primarily to treat acute iron poisoning and chronic iron overload conditions such as those resulting from frequent blood transfusions. It binds free ferric iron (Fe3+) to form a stable complex that can be excreted in urine and bile, thereby reducing tissue iron accumulation. Deferoxamine also has activity as an inhibitor of ferroptosis (iron-dependent cell death) and can modulate hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) expression, contributing to its antioxidant effects. Off-label, it is sometimes used for aluminum toxicity[1][3][4][5][7].
