Overview
Defurocumarinized bergamot is a processed form of bergamot essential oil (BEO) extracted from the peel of *Citrus bergamia* Risso et Poiteau, from which phototoxic and potentially carcinogenic furocoumarins (such as bergaptene or 5-methoxypsoralen) have been removed. This modification allows for the safe topical or systemic application of the oil without the risk of skin sensitization or phototoxicity. Preclinical research indicates that this oil possesses potent analgesic and anxiolytic properties mediated through the modulation of the endogenous opioid system and the regulation of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission (glutamate and GABA). In clinical development, it is being evaluated as a nanotechnological topical formulation—designed to be odourless and indistinguishable from a placebo—to treat agitation and behavioral symptoms in patients with severe dementia, potentially by addressing underlying pain that contributes to neuropsychiatric distress.
