degarelix

Degarelix is a selective gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist used primarily for androgen deprivation therapy in patients with prostate cancer. It competitively and reversibly binds to pituitary GnRH receptors, leading to rapid suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which in turn reduces testosterone production by the testes. Unlike GnRH agonists, degarelix does not cause an initial surge in LH or testosterone levels ("flare"), making it advantageous for immediate testosterone suppression. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection and has demonstrated efficacy comparable to leuprolide but with a faster onset of action[1][4][8]. Degarelix was developed by Ferring Pharmaceuticals and is marketed under the brand name Firmagon[7].
