Overview

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is a processed herbal extract derived from the root of *Glycyrrhiza glabra*. The refining process specifically removes glycyrrhizin, a constituent associated with mineralocorticoid-like side effects such as hypertension, edema, and hypokalemia, thereby making the extract safer for long-term consumption. DGL is primarily utilized as a mucosal protective agent in the management of upper gastrointestinal disorders, including gastric and duodenal ulcers, as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Its mechanism of action involves stimulating the proliferation of mucus-secreting cells and increasing the production of protective prostaglandins and mucus, which enhances the integrity of the mucosal barrier against gastric acid and pepsin. It is widely available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement, often formulated as chewable tablets to facilitate mixing with saliva, which is thought to activate its therapeutic properties.
