Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DehydraTECH-semaglutide is an oral formulation of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist semaglutide, developed using Lexaria Bioscience's patented DehydraTECH drug delivery technology. This technology enhances the oral bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of semaglutide by improving its absorption into the bloodstream and enabling faster peak drug delivery compared to conventional formulations such as Rybelsus®. The formulation preserves semaglutide in its monomeric form, facilitating effective permeation through the gastric epithelium without requiring proprietary excipients like salcaprozate sodium (SNAC) used in Rybelsus®. Clinical pilot studies have demonstrated that DehydraTECH-semaglutide achieves higher blood levels of semaglutide, better blood glucose control, reduced side effects such as nausea, and sustained drug presence over 24 hours. It is primarily indicated for type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity treatment. The developer aims to advance this formulation through Phase 1b clinical trials with plans for regulatory approval pathways in Australia and potentially the US.
