Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dehydrated alcohol (ethanol) is a neurolytic agent developed by Ablative Solutions for use in the Peregrine System Kit, a drug-device combination designed for alcohol-mediated renal denervation. The therapy is intended to treat patients with uncontrolled hypertension by targeting the renal sympathetic nervous system, which plays a key role in blood pressure regulation. During a minimally invasive transcatheter procedure, microdoses of dehydrated alcohol (0.6 ml per renal artery) are infused into the periadventitial space of the renal arteries using the Peregrine System Infusion Catheter. The alcohol chemically ablates the surrounding sympathetic nerves, thereby reducing overactive signaling. The system's efficacy and safety were evaluated in the TARGET BP I pivotal trial, a randomized, sham-controlled study that met its primary endpoint of reducing 24-hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension despite medication.
