DEHYDRO-2(S)-AMINO-6-BORONOHEXANOIC ACID is a synthetic small molecule and an experimental drug candidate that functions as a potent and specific inhibitor of arginase. Arginase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-arginine into L-ornithine and urea. By inhibiting arginase, this compound increases the bioavailability of L-arginine, which is a substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) to produce nitric oxide (NO). Elevated arginase activity is implicated in various pathological conditions, and its inhibition can restore NO production, leading to potential therapeutic benefits. Research has explored its use in preclinical models for conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), allergic asthma, erectile dysfunction, and bacterial infections like those caused by Bacillus anthracis.
