Overview

Dehydrocholic acid is a synthetic bile acid produced by the oxidation of cholic acid. It acts as a hydrocholeretic agent, increasing bile output and stimulating biliary lipid secretion. Its mechanism involves inducing choleresis (increased bile flow), which is associated with increased biliary lipid secretion and reduced secretion of endogenous or exogenous biliary components. The drug may decrease bile phospholipid secretion due to its inability to form micelles effectively, and it can enhance permeability in canalicular membranes to facilitate exchange between bile and plasma[1][2][7][8]. It has been used primarily as a cholagogue (to promote discharge of bile) and hydrocholeretic in various digestive disorders[4][7]. Over-the-counter use has been discontinued in some regions such as Canada[1][2].
