Overview

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is an endogenous steroid hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands, with additional synthesis in the gonads and brain. It serves as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of androgen and estrogen sex steroids. DHEA acts as a precursor to testosterone and estrogen and has weak intrinsic androgenic and estrogenic activity. It also functions as a neurosteroid with modulatory effects on neurotrophic factor receptors in the central nervous system[5]. Synthetic DHEA is available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement (in the US) or prescription medication (prasterone), used for conditions such as vaginal atrophy, adrenal insufficiency, depression, osteoporosis/low bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, sexual dysfunction (especially hypoactive sexual desire disorder), infertility adjunctive therapy before IVF cycles, lupus (as a steroid-sparing agent), and possibly for mood disorders[1][2][3][5][6]. Its use for anti-aging or athletic performance enhancement lacks robust evidence; most studies show little benefit for muscle strength or physical performance[1][2][4].
