Dekaparin is a synthetic, heparin-derived oligosaccharide being developed by Glycan Therapeutics. It features a unique dual mechanism of action, providing both anticoagulant activity through the inhibition of Factor Xa and anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1). This dual-target approach is designed to address conditions where both thrombosis and inflammation are key drivers of pathology, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis following total knee replacement (TKR) and the prevention of liver ischemia-reperfusion injury. By neutralizing HMGB1, a pro-inflammatory alarmin, Dekaparin aims to reduce tissue damage and systemic inflammation more effectively than traditional anticoagulants. The drug is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
