Overview

Delavirdine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used in combination with other antiretroviral medications for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It works by binding directly to viral reverse transcriptase and blocking RNA-dependent and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities by disrupting the enzyme's catalytic site. This inhibits viral replication, helping to decrease viral load and increase CD4+ cell counts in patients with HIV.
