Delipidated autologous virus vaccine is an experimental therapeutic vaccine modality designed to treat chronic retroviral infections, such as HIV-1 and SIV. The process involves collecting the virus from an infected individual, removing the lipid component of the viral envelope using a solvent-based delipidation process, and re-administering the modified, non-infectious viral particles back into the same patient. This modification is intended to expose hidden or "cryptic" epitopes and enhance the processing and presentation of viral antigens to the immune system. In preclinical macaque models of SIV infection, lymph node-targeted administration of the delipidated virus resulted in significant reductions in viral load and delayed disease progression by eliciting potent antiviral control.
