Delipidated bacillus calmette-guérin (dBCG) is a modified version of the live attenuated *Mycobacterium bovis* BCG vaccine. It is produced by treating the bacteria with petroleum ether to selectively remove surface-exposed inflammatory lipids, such as trehalose dimycolate (TDM), phenolic glycolipids (PGL), and phthiocerol dimycocerosates (PDIMs), while maintaining bacterial viability. This modification is specifically designed to reduce the excessive inflammatory response and lung immunopathology associated with traditional BCG when administered via the pulmonary route. Research indicates that pulmonary delivery of dBCG enhances protective immunity against *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* by promoting IL-17A-mediated responses and inducing robust local T-cell memory, potentially offering a more effective strategy for preventing pulmonary tuberculosis than standard intradermal vaccination.
