The delipidated hepatitis B vaccine is an experimental therapeutic approach developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The technology utilizes a proprietary solvent-based delipidation process to remove the lipid envelope from the hepatitis B virus found in a patient's plasma. By stripping away the viral envelope, the process aims to expose previously shielded, highly conserved internal proteins, such as the hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg), to the patient's immune system. Upon re-infusion of the delipidated plasma, these exposed antigens are intended to stimulate a potent cellular immune response, specifically T-cell mediated, capable of recognizing and eliminating HBV-infected hepatocytes. This autologous therapeutic vaccine strategy was primarily developed by Lipid Sciences (now HDL Therapeutics) using their Plasma Delipidation System (PDS).
