Delorazepam

Delorazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative characterized by anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant properties. Its mechanism of action involves acting as a positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, thereby enhancing the binding of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. This leads to an increased influx of chloride ions into neurons, resulting in hyperpolarization and reduced neuronal excitability. Delorazepam is primarily indicated for the short-term management of severe anxiety disorders, as a premedication before surgical or diagnostic procedures, and in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal. It exhibits a long elimination half-life, typically ranging from 80 to 115 hours, and is metabolized in the liver.
