Overview

Delta-2-Albomycin A1 is a natural antibiotic belonging to the albomycin family, produced by Gram-positive Actinomyces subtropicus bacteria. It is an iron(III) complexed siderophore-antibiotic conjugate, classified as a "Trojan horse" antibiotic. The molecule consists of an iron-chelating hydroxamate-type siderophore linked to an antibiotic warhead. Bacteria recognize and import the compound via their iron uptake systems; once inside, the antibiotic moiety inhibits essential bacterial processes, leading to bacteriostatic effects. Delta-2-Albomycin A1 has demonstrated potent in vitro activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens—including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus pneumoniae—surpassing standard antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, and penicillin in potency. However, it remains experimental due to synthesis challenges and lack of commercial development[5][4][3].
