Overview

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive constituent of cannabis, acting as a partial agonist at the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. In the REVELIO research study conducted by the University of Bern, research-grade cannabis containing approximately 18% THC and less than 1% CBD is administered via inhalation (smoking) to healthy recreational users. The study aims to evaluate an in-vehicle real-time system for detecting cannabis-impaired driving (CID) by analyzing vehicle, driver, and physiological sensor data. Participants receive a controlled dose of 0.67 mg THC per kg body weight, and their driving performance is assessed on a closed test track. This research is intended to support the development of driver assistance systems that can identify impairment independently of THC blood concentrations, which often correlate poorly with actual driving ability.
