Drug intelligence / Profile preview
"deltamethrin + piperonyl butoxide" is a combination formulation that pairs the synthetic Type II pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin with the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). Deltamethrin exerts its insecticidal effect by binding to voltage-gated sodium channels in the insect nervous system, preventing their closure and causing prolonged sodium influx, which leads to continuous nerve firing, paralysis, and death. PBO acts as a synergist by inhibiting cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (mixed-function oxidases) in insects, which are the primary enzymes responsible for the metabolic detoxification of pyrethroids. By blocking these enzymes, PBO prevents the breakdown of deltamethrin, thereby restoring its potency against pyrethroid-resistant insect populations. This combination is widely utilized in public health vector control, particularly on long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) such as PermaNet 3.0 and DawaPlus 3.0/4.0 to combat malaria-transmitting mosquitoes. Additionally, it is formulated as a topical pediculicide and scabicide (e.g., Launol) for the treatment of head lice and scabies in humans.
