demeclocycline

Demeclocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of susceptible bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and eye infections, certain sexually transmitted infections, and diseases such as plague and anthrax. It is also used as an adjunct in the treatment of severe acne. Demeclocycline works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis; it binds reversibly to the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits in bacteria, preventing amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome and thus impairing translation. This action is bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal. Additionally, demeclocycline has a unique off-label use for treating hyponatremia associated with syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), due to its ability to induce nephrogenic diabetes insipidus by interfering with vasopressin V2 receptor signaling[1][2][3][4][5][6].
