Overview

Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) is an osteoconductive and osteoinductive bone graft substitute derived from processed human cadaveric bone. The demineralization process removes the mineral component (hydroxyapatite) while preserving the organic matrix, which includes type I collagen and various endogenous growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). These factors promote the recruitment and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into osteoblasts, thereby facilitating new bone formation (osteogenesis). In the context of clinical trials sponsored by OhioHealth (such as NCT02390115), DBM (specifically the DBX brand) serves as a standard-of-care comparator for evaluating the efficacy and safety of novel allografts, such as NuCel amniotic tissue, in patients undergoing posterolateral lumbar spinal fusion for conditions like degenerative disc disease, spondylosis, and spondylolisthesis.
