Denatured Pen c 13 is a recombinant protein derived from Pen c 13, a major protease allergen secreted by the mold *Penicillium citrinum*. Unlike its native form (n-Pen c 13), denatured Pen c 13 is structurally misfolded and lacks enzymatic (proteolytic) activity. However, it retains linear allergenic epitopes, meaning it can still bind to IgE antibodies. This modified form is being investigated as a research tool to understand allergenicity and as a potential component for hypoallergenic candidate vaccines, aiming to induce immune tolerance without the damaging proteolytic effects of the active allergen.
