Overview

Dendrobium nobile is a perennial epiphytic herb in the Orchidaceae family and a well-known species of the genus Dendrobium. It has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a tonic to nourish Yin, clear heat, relieve coughs, brighten eyes, strengthen body constitution, and promote longevity[5][6][7]. The plant contains various bioactive compounds including alkaloids (notably dendrobine), polysaccharides, phenols and flavonoids[4][5]. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, anticancer/antitumor activities as well as hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering), hypolipidemic (lipid-lowering), hepatoprotective and renoprotective effects[3][4][5]. Mechanistically these effects are attributed to inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor beta; suppression of inflammatory signaling pathways like NF-κB; neutralization of free radicals; modulation of immune cell activity; regulation of blood glucose levels via improved insulin sensitivity; protection against oxidative stress-induced cellular damage; inhibition of cancer cell proliferation; promotion of gastric acid secretion through stimulation of G cells and increased gastrin release[3][4]. In traditional use it is also considered beneficial for respiratory health (coughs/sore throat), gastrointestinal disorders (constipation/gastritis/stomach pain/dry mouth/anorexia), diabetes management ("wasting-thirsting" disorder), cardiovascular health and neurodegenerative conditions related to aging[3][4][5].
