Densiron

Densiron (specifically Densiron 68) is a high-density silicone oil used as an intraocular tamponade agent in vitreoretinal surgery. It is a homogeneous mixture of perfluorohexyloctane (F6H8), a semifluorinated alkane, and high-viscosity silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane). With a density of approximately 1.06 g/cm³, it is heavier than water, allowing it to sink and exert downward tamponade pressure on the inferior retina. This property makes it specifically indicated for the treatment of complex inferior rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, particularly those complicated by proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Developed by Fluoron GmbH, it is typically used as a temporary internal tamponade and is surgically removed after the retina has stabilized.
