Depigmented glutaraldehyde-polymerized birch pollen allergenic extract, marketed under the brand name **Depigoid Birch**, is a modified allergen extract (allergoid) used for subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT). The manufacturing process involves depigmentation with mild acid to remove low molecular weight compounds and polymerization with glutaraldehyde to cross-link proteins. This modification significantly reduces the extract's allergenicity (IgE binding) while preserving its immunogenicity (T-cell epitopes), allowing for the safe administration of higher allergen doses. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of birch pollen-induced allergic rhinitis, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and intermittent asthma. Clinical studies have also explored its efficacy in birch pollen-sensitized patients with atopic dermatitis. The extract is typically adsorbed on aluminum hydroxide and aims to induce immune tolerance, characterized by a shift from a Th2 to a Th1/Treg immune response and the production of allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies.
