Depo-Medrol + lidocaine

Depo-Medrol + lidocaine is a combination therapy consisting of the corticosteroid methylprednisolone acetate and the local anesthetic lidocaine. In the context of a University of Calgary clinical trial, it is administered as an ultrasound-guided perineural injection for the treatment of post-traumatic greater occipital neuralgia, typically following a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury. The lidocaine component provides immediate, transient nerve blockade by inhibiting sodium channels, while the Depo-Medrol (a repository suspension of methylprednisolone) provides sustained anti-inflammatory effects to reduce nerve irritation and pain. This combination serves as a standard-of-care control in studies evaluating novel interventions such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
