Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Depotrex is an extended-release injectable formulation of naltrexone, a small molecule mu-opioid receptor antagonist, originally developed by Biotek, Inc. for the treatment of opioid dependence. The formulation contains 228 mg of naltrexone and is designed to be administered via subcutaneous injection into the gluteal muscle, providing a sustained therapeutic effect for approximately one month. By blocking the euphoric and reinforcing effects of opioids, Depotrex aims to prevent relapse in opioid-dependent individuals. It was notably evaluated in a multi-site pilot feasibility trial coordinated by the University of Pennsylvania, which focused on the treatment of opioid-dependent parolees and probationers under criminal justice supervision, demonstrating the feasibility of long-acting antagonist therapy in this high-risk population.
