Overview

Deproteinized bovine bone (DBB), most commonly known by the brand name **Bio-Oss**, is a xenogenic bone substitute material used extensively in dental and maxillofacial surgery for bone regeneration. Manufactured by **Geistlich Pharma**, it is produced by removing all organic components from bovine bone through a high-temperature treatment process, leaving a porous mineral scaffold composed of natural hydroxyapatite. This scaffold is chemically and structurally similar to human bone, providing an osteoconductive environment that supports the attachment and proliferation of osteogenic cells and the ingrowth of new bone tissue. While it lacks intrinsic osteoinductive or osteogenic properties, it is highly effective for maintaining volume in alveolar ridge preservation, sinus floor elevation, and periodontal defect repair. It is often used in combination with barrier membranes (like Bio-Gide) or growth factors to enhance clinical outcomes.
