Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus allergen-antibody complex is a biologic preparation consisting of antigen-antibody complexes formed from allergens of the common house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and an excess of purified autologous specific antibodies. This investigational therapy has been studied for the treatment of allergic bronchial asthma in patients hypersensitive to D. pteronyssinus. The mechanism involves inoculation with these complexes, which leads to a marked reduction in clinical symptoms and medication use, as well as decreased specific IgE levels and reduced skin and bronchial reactivity to the allergen. Unlike conventional hyposensitization (allergen immunotherapy), this approach uses much lower amounts of allergen and appears to act through different immunological mechanisms[1]. No systemic side effects were observed in clinical studies; only mild local reactions occurred at injection sites.
