DermaVir is a therapeutic vaccine designed to boost the immune system's ability to kill HIV-infected cells in patients with compromised immunity. It is described as the first in vivo dendritic cell-targeting therapeutic vaccine developed for HIV treatment. The vaccine utilizes plasmid DNA nanomedicine expressing HIV (Clade B) virus-like particles comprising 15 antigens. This mechanism is intended to induce predominantly central memory T-cell responses and boost HIV-specific T-cell immune responses. Clinical studies have shown that DermaVir has an excellent safety profile, comparable to traditional vaccines in healthy adults, and was well-tolerated across tested doses in approximately 70 HIV-infected patients. The immune boosting correlates with the amount of nanomedicine received and has demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of HIV-RNA in patients treated with the optimal dose compared to placebo. As of 2018, the technology was licensed for Russia and CIS, and plans for a Phase III study were underway.
