Derris scandens

Derris scandens (Roxb.) Benth. is a medicinal plant belonging to the Fabaceae family that has been used as an active ingredient in Thai traditional medicine for pain treatment. The dried stem powder and ethanolic extract are recommended in Thailand's National List of Essential Medicines (NLEMs) for musculoskeletal pain treatment as herbal medicine[1]. The plant is characterized by a high content of flavonoids and isoflavonoids. Clinical studies have shown that D. scandens may be considered as an alternative for musculoskeletal pain reduction, with efficacy comparable to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)[1]. Its stems are traditionally used as an expectorant, antitussive, diuretic, antidysentery treatment, and for muscle ache relief[5]. Research has demonstrated that D. scandens possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulating, and blood pressure regulating properties, without the side effects associated with long-term use of steroids and NSAIDs[4]. It is considered non-toxic even at high doses and functions as a free radical scavenger and antioxidant[4].
