Overview

Des-enkephalin-gamma-endorphin is a synthetic peptide fragment derived from gamma-endorphin (specifically beta-lipotropin 66–77). It is the shortest sequence of gamma-endorphin with demonstrated neuroleptic-like (antipsychotic) activity in animal models and has been investigated for its potential use in treating schizophrenia. The mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of endogenous opioid pathways, possibly by influencing the fragmentation or activity of endorphins implicated in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Clinical trials have shown some antipsychotic effects without significant side effects, but its efficacy appears variable and may be influenced by concurrent neuroleptic medication[1][2][3][4]. There is no evidence that it has been approved for clinical use.
