Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Deselsulfavirine (VM-1500A) is a small molecule non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) and the active metabolite of the prodrug elsulfavirine. Developed by Viriom Inc., it is being evaluated for the treatment and prevention (PrEP) of HIV-1 infection. Deselsulfavirine works by binding to an allosteric site on the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, which inhibits the enzyme's activity and prevents the conversion of viral RNA into DNA, thereby blocking viral replication. The drug is specifically being developed as a long-acting injectable formulation to provide a more convenient dosing schedule and improve adherence compared to daily oral regimens.
