Desetivir fumarate (WNN01) is an orally bioavailable small molecule nucleoside analog prodrug developed for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19). Developed by Wannan Medical College Yijishan Hospital, it acts as an inhibitor of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Following oral administration, the prodrug is metabolized into its active triphosphate form, which competes with endogenous nucleotides for incorporation into the nascent viral RNA strand. This incorporation leads to premature chain termination, effectively halting viral RNA synthesis and replication. Desetivir was designed to provide an oral alternative to intravenous antivirals like remdesivir, aiming to facilitate easier administration in outpatient settings for patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19.
