Overview

Desferrioxamine (also known as deferoxamine) is a high-affinity iron-chelating agent used primarily to treat chronic iron overload resulting from frequent blood transfusions in patients with conditions such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia, as well as for the management of acute iron poisoning. Developed as a generic formulation by Lipomed, it works by binding to free ferric iron (Fe3+) in the plasma and cells to form a stable, water-soluble complex called ferrioxamine. This complex is then excreted by the kidneys and through the bile, effectively reducing the systemic iron burden and preventing toxic damage to vital organs like the heart and liver. Due to its short half-life and poor oral absorption, it is typically administered via slow subcutaneous or intravenous infusion.
