Overview

Desidustat is an orally bioavailable small molecule drug developed for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), both in patients on dialysis and those not on dialysis. It acts as a hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitor, stabilizing hypoxia-inducible factors and thereby stimulating endogenous erythropoietin production to promote erythropoiesis. Desidustat was discovered and developed by Zydus Life Sciences (formerly Zydus Cadila) and is marketed under the brand names Oxemia (by Zydus) and Rytstat (by Sun Pharma). The drug has received approval in India for anemia due to CKD, with ongoing clinical development for other indications such as chemotherapy-induced anemia, COVID-19-related anemia, sickle cell disease, inflammation-induced anemia, acute kidney injury, complement-mediated diseases, and stroke in CKD patients[1][2][4][7].
