Overview

Desmethylsertraline is an active metabolite of the antidepressant drug sertraline. It acts as a monoamine reuptake inhibitor, affecting serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine reuptake. This results in increased levels of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft, which can enhance neurotransmitter signaling and contribute to therapeutic benefits. Desmethylsertraline is less potent than sertraline as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor but exhibits a more balanced effect across serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine reuptake, functioning as a serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (SNDRI).
