Overview

Desmethylsibutramine is a **small molecule monoamine reuptake inhibitor** and the major active metabolite of sibutramine. It inhibits the **norepinephrine transporter** and **serotonin transporter**, increasing synaptic norepinephrine and serotonin and thereby producing anorectic effects linked to reduced appetite and altered energy balance. The compound appears to be more potent than sibutramine in neurotransmitter reuptake inhibition, but it was not developed as a standalone marketed medicine; instead, it is primarily recognized as the pharmacologically active metabolite contributing to sibutramine's anti-obesity activity and has also been reported as an undeclared adulterant in some weight-loss supplements.
