Desmoteplase is a recombinant, highly fibrin-specific plasminogen activator enzyme originally derived from the saliva of the vampire bat (*Desmodus rotundus*). It catalyzes the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, which breaks down fibrin clots. Desmoteplase is structurally related to human tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) but exhibits greater fibrin selectivity and a longer half-life. It was developed as a thrombolytic agent for acute ischemic stroke and other thromboembolic conditions, with early trials suggesting potential for an extended therapeutic window compared to alteplase. However, phase III clinical trials did not demonstrate significant clinical benefit over placebo in stroke patients treated 3–9 hours after symptom onset, leading to discontinuation of its development[1][2][4][7].
