Overview

DESOBEL is a third-generation combined oral hormonal contraceptive developed and marketed by the French pharmaceutical company Effik. It is composed of the progestin desogestrel (150 micrograms) and the estrogen ethinylestradiol, provided in two formulations containing either 20 micrograms (Desobel Gé 20) or 30 micrograms (Desobel Gé 30) of the estrogen component. The medication functions by suppressing the mid-cycle surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thereby inhibiting ovulation. Additionally, it induces changes in the cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and alters the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Desobel is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women and is notable for being the first low-dose third-generation pill to receive reimbursement in the French healthcare system.
