Overview
This investigational combination therapy involves the administration of oral estroprogestins (specifically desogestrel and ethinylestradiol) in conjunction with subcutaneous interferon-beta 1a (Rebif) for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Developed and studied at the MS Centre Sant'Andrea Hospital (Sapienza University of Rome), the treatment explores the hypothesis that sex hormones exert immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects that can synergize with standard disease-modifying therapies. The combination was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00151801) using two different estroprogestin dosing regimens (Mercilon and Gracial) to assess safety, tolerability, and efficacy on MRI-detected brain lesions and cognitive function in female patients.
