Desonide is a synthetic nonfluorinated corticosteroid used topically as a low-potency anti-inflammatory agent. It is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis in both adults and children[1][2][3][4][5][8]. As a topical corticosteroid, desonide exerts anti-inflammatory, antipruritic (anti-itch), and vasoconstrictive effects. The mechanism of action involves binding to cytosolic glucocorticoid receptor; this complex then migrates to the cell nucleus where it modulates gene expression by activating or repressing specific genes. Corticosteroids are thought to induce phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins), which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting arachidonic acid release from membrane phospholipids[4][8]. The precise mechanism for its clinical effect in skin conditions remains unclear[6].
