Overview

Desoxyrhaponticin is a naturally occurring stilbene glycoside found predominantly in the roots of rhubarb species such as Rheum palmatum and Rheum tanguticum. It is chemically classified as a derivative of rhaponticin and features a glucose moiety attached to a stilbene backbone. Desoxyrhaponticin acts primarily as an inhibitor of fatty acid synthase (FASN), disrupting fatty acid biosynthesis in cells. This inhibition leads to apoptosis in human cancer cells by impairing membrane formation and energy homeostasis. Additionally, it may suppress inflammatory mediators like nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines in immune cells and has been noted for potential anti-diabetic effects through inhibition of glucose uptake[1][2][5][7]. Desoxyrhaponticin is also present as one component of the herbal extract ERr 731®, which has been studied for alleviating climacteric complaints in perimenopausal women[10].
