This combination therapy consists of the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) desvenlafaxine augmented with omega-3 fatty acids (specifically eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid). Developed as an investigational strategy by UConn Health, the combination was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01803711) for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in patients with comorbid medical conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Desvenlafaxine functions by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, thereby increasing their synaptic concentrations. The addition of omega-3 fatty acids is intended to leverage their anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties to enhance the clinical response in medically ill populations who may have higher levels of systemic inflammation contributing to depressive symptoms.
